Shl
Founded as Sweden’s premier ice hockey competition, the SHL is a fast-paced, high-skill, physically demanding league that serves as a premier development platform for young players and a proving ground for veterans. Tenacious checking, elite skating, and smart puck possession define every night as teams chase the Le Mat Trophy, the league’s coveted crown. The league comprises 14 professional clubs with deep regional support, a strong scouting network, and a tradition of producing world-class talent that feeds the national team and the NHL. The SHL blends strategic systems with explosive offense, turning most games into national-stage showcases. Season structure includes a regular season followed by a multi-round, best-of-seven playoff bracket that crowns the champion in spring. The schedule typically runs from September through February/March, with playoffs intensifying in March and the final decided in late spring. Notable clubs include Frölunda HC, Skellefteå AIK, Växjö Lakers, Färjestad BK, Djurgårdens IF, Luleå HF, Rögle BK, HV71, Linköping HC, Malmö Redhawks, Timrå IK, Brynäs IF, Örebro HK, and IK Oskarshamn. SHL emerged from Elitserien in 2013 and has since been a talent factory for the NHL, the Swedish national team, and European leagues. Fans follow for the speed, skill, rivalries, and the drama of the playoffs.
