How the numbers are calculated
Cards = yellow and red cards shown to players during 90 minutes (a second yellow counts as a yellow plus a red, as most bookmakers settle). Cards for coaches and substitutes on the bench and cards in extra time are excluded. Penalties = penalties awarded during the match (shoot-outs excluded). “vs league” compares the referee with the average of the exact league seasons this referee worked, so a referee from a card-heavy league is not called strict just because of the league.

How are the card predictions calculated?
The model combines the appointed referee’s card rate (compared with the leagues he or she works in) with both teams’ disciplinary record, pulled toward the league average when there is little data. It is tested on more than 22,000 matches.
When is the referee known?
Appointments are usually published 1–3 days before kick-off. Until then we show expected cards based on the two teams only; the list updates every few hours.
Which card markets do you cover?
Total cards over 3.5 and 4.5, both teams booked, penalty awarded and red card. A second yellow counts as a yellow plus a red, as with most bookmakers; cards for coaches and in extra time are not counted.
